Iowa DNR: 11-year-old Iowa City boy accidentally shot by brother while hunting
JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) —
An 11-year-old boy is recovering from a hunting accident that happened in Johnson County over the weekend.
The Iowa DNR says 11 and 13-year-old brothers were deer hunting on a private property with their grandfather on Dec. 10. The brothers were standing along a fence row between a stretch of timber about 160 yards apart. Their grandfather was walking along the timber pushing deer out into the field toward the brothers.
At one point, a doe came in from the opposite direction of the timber and both brothers took a shoot at the deer. The deer then ran between the boys when the older brother kept shooting, hitting his younger brother in the hip.
The boy was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident is still under investigation by the DNR.
The DNR says to always be aware of where other hunters are at all times, avoid target fixation, and always make sure that there is a safe backstop before taking a shot.
