I.C. Robert A. Lee Rec Center closed for construction
IOWA CITY, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) —
The Robert A. Lee Recreation Center in Iowa City is closed until early January for renovation and maintenance work.
the project includes ripping out and preplacing the building main stairwell work on two new restrooms on the main floor.
Parks and Recreation Director Juli Seydell Johnson says the projects are to make the areas more accessible.
Updates are also being done in some of the offices where City Parks and Rec staff work.
Some employees have had to relocate while the work is underway.
Some major upkeep is also happening in the gymnasium and pool areas.
Workers are sanding and resurfacing the gym floor, working on basketball hoops and painting the walls.
In the pool staff is draining and painting the wading pool as well as conducting other pool maintenance.
The work will cost more than $160,000 to complete.
Seydell Johnson says they decided to close during work because the work creates to much dust and noise; work on the stairs would also limit accessibility in the building.
While the center is closed, recreation programs will be moved to other locations.
The Mercer Park Aquatic Center is also extending hours at their indoor pool to make up for the Robert A. Lee pool being closed.
The center is expected to reopen to the public January 8th.
