Especially for You Race Against Breast Cancer
CEDAR RAPIDS, Ia (CBS2/FOX28) —
Excitement is building in the corridor for the annual especially for you race against breast cancer. The event attracts around 15,000 people every year.
It's easy to see why runners are returning to downtown cedar rapids for the 27th year in a row.
Breast cancer patients and survivors plan to wear their t-shirts and scarves without fear, but with courage as they trek through all five kilometers.
All because of the overwhelming support brought about by this one event organized by nearly 350 volunteers in the last 365 days.
"Every year is just so special, it is absolutely amazing to be standing there at the start line and just literally seeing close to 15,000 people come together with the same color shirt... really banning together to support people on the breast cancer journey regardless of what stage they are in their journey says, Especially for You race director, Michelle Cole, "It's really truly awe inspiring."
Marsha Klostermann is participating as she has done for several years, but this year is very different.
"I kind of have mixed emotions about walking this year because it will be my first year walking as a breast cancer patient and having that scarf but I know it's going to be a great experience."
She stresses the importance of getting mammograms and points to the Especially for You organization for guidance. "Definitely contact the Especially for You group, they will help you," says Klostermann.
Cole says that since 2008, the organization has been able to provide over 54,000 people with access to over 10,000 services including free mammograms and breast-care for residents in the corridor.
