UPDATE: Police say first homicide of 2016 not random
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS2/FOX28) —
UPDATE (8:00 pm): Police have identified one of the gunshot victims as 25-year-old Joseph Perkins, Jr. of Chicago, Illinois. Perkins was pronounced dead at the scene. A second person, a 21-year-old man, had a gunshot wound to the leg. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, and is expected to survive.
Police said they believed a shooter got out of a vehicle and fired several rounds before leaving the scene. They are still investigating how many people were in the car or how many of them fired weapons.
"Gun violence is a symptom of other issues that are creating it and so the police department needs to work with the rest of the community to address this problem," Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman said.
Police are not releasing any other information at this time. We will continue to update this story as we learn more.
Cedar Rapids Police tell CBS2/FOX28 that two people were shot at an apartment complex Tuesday night. Officers were called to the Cedar Valley Townhouses in Cedar Rapids, located at 3000 J Street SW. Investigators would only say that two people were shot, their conditions are not known at this hour. But our crew on the scene reports seeing a body bag in the area where officers are investigating.
There is no information as to what may have led to this shooting. We have a crew on the scene and will bring you updates throughout the night.
