University of Iowa Press Conference on Flooding

Updated: Wednesday, May 29 2013, 10:07 PM CDT

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- The University of Iowa says it will shut down three buildings on its arts campus ahead of flooding that is forecast to hit in the coming days.

University official Rod Lehnertz said Wednesday that an art building, a former art museum now used for music programs, and a theatre building would be emptied and closed by Friday.

The buildings sit along the Iowa River, which is projected to flood over the weekend or early next week. They were each hard hit during a flood in 2008.

Lehnertz says university officials are still considering where to move the programs and classes typically hosted at those buildings. He says the "likelihood of a quick return" to them is unlikely, given that it could take several weeks for the river to recede.
