Sex Offender in Class

Updated: Wednesday, August 27 2014, 11:15 PM CDT
IOWA CITY, IA – (CBS2/FOX28) Parents and administrators are reacting to news that a student who must register as a sex offender will be walking the halls of an Iowa City school.

Superintendent Stephen Murley says by law the district must place the student and make sure they receive an education.  Some parents say they’re concerned about the secrecy in the case.  The district can’t disclose the name, age, sex or school the offender will attend or the nature of the crime they committed.

Several parents told CBS2 they’re all for second chances for someone so young, but only with strict supervision.  Murley says the student will be monitored before, during and after school hours to ensure all students are safe.

He says Iowa City teachers and staff have experience and are confident there won’t be any problems, “Many people are not aware of this, but we have lots of students who are transitioning in and out of the school district.  They may be coming to and from mental health institutions, they may be coming to and from adjudication somewhere in the state, so we have a lot of experience working with students who are coming into and out of one of those systems.”

Superintendent Murley says he also wants parents to know that the student has gone through a state rehabilitation program to be eligible to enter school.
