Sand in the City Finds a New Use for Sand in New Bohemia

Updated: Saturday, June 22 2013, 05:03 PM CDT
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) – With sand bags put away, residents in the New Bohemia District are a little more graceful with their sand.   “A week and a half ago this sand was around the doors and this week we’re carving it so it’s definitely irony,” said Sand Coach John Armon.   This week, it’s the sand that’s bringing people back to NewBo.   “Not enough of this happens in America,” said Sand in the City Instigator Bert Adams. “I’ll go to Europe and everywhere and there’s always a downtown plaza. A place that’s made for events. This is made for events.”   “People will always turn up for something that’s fun and it’s a nice place to come down here,” said Cedar Rapids resident Bob Clevenger.   The payoff isn’t just in the sand. The teamwork required to build sculptures like this one quickly brings co-workers together.   “There’s a lot of times the sand will collapse so you have to learn to deal with adversity and come up with solutions, which is kind of a nice workplace benefit,” said Armon.   All while remembering: it’s all about having a good time.   “I promise to have fun, to help others have fun, and to un-litter,” said Adams as he recited his Sandcarver’s Pledge. “Then you turn to the person next to you and give them a high-five. Now you’re sworn in as a kid on the beach. Have fun!”Sand in the City Finds a New Use for Sand in New Bohemia
