New Prescription Drug Abuse Education Program

Updated: Wednesday, October 9 2013, 11:22 PM CDT
CEDAR RAPIDS (CBS 2/FOX 28) -- A new program is looking to protect teens from prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse.

The Iowa Substance Abuse Information Center kicked off its "Iowa Medicine TLC" program Wednesday in Cedar Rapids. The TLC stands for talk, lock, and connect.

The program is meant to teach parents the importance of talking to their kids about drug abuse. It's also meant to encourage teens to step forward if they think they have a problem.

The program also teaches parents about properly securing and disposing of unused prescription medicines. Tips include removing identifying labels, as well as mixing prescriptions with used kitty litter or coffee grounds in a plastic bag before throwing them away.

You can find more on the program by visiting the Iowa Medicine TLC website, at Prescription Drug Abuse Education Program
