Updated: Wednesday, August 27 2014, 05:55 AM CDT
OELWEIN, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - Former Oelwein mayor Jason Manus is speaking out about the charges that have been leveled against him.
In a resignation letter he sent to the City Council, he says he is innocent.
The 36-year-old submitted his resignation on Monday, after he was accused of sexually assaulting two young girls on two separate occasions back in 2010.
In the four-sentence letter, Manus says quote "I steadfastly maintain my innocence and vow that I will continue to fight these unwarranted allegations, nevertheless, my circumstances undoubtedly cast a cloud upon the city, which is regrettable."
He says his resignation is in the best interest of the city.
Manus was arrested last month, and is out on bond.
His next court date is set for Wednesday.
The City Council now has to decide whether they will appoint a new mayor or if they will call for a city-wide election.

Letter Verbatim:
To the City Council, Oelwein, Iowa, the Office of the Mayor and the City Clerk
Each of you are aware of the unfortunate circumstances that have taken me away from my duties as the Mayor of Oelwein over the course of the last two weeks. I steadfastly maintain my innocence and vow that I will continue to fight these unwarranted allegations. Nevertheless, my circumstances undoubtedly cast a cloud upon the city, which is regrettable.
Therefore, effective immediately, and in the interest of the City, I tender my resignation as the Mayor of Oelwein.
