CR Bridge Inspections

Updated: Tuesday, August 19 2014, 06:31 PM CDT

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28)-- It's that time again when the city inspects our bridges.

The City of Cedar Rapids is currently in the process of working on a $2.4 million project that involves inspecting all the Cedar River bridges within city limits.

Drivers and pedestrians can expect to see detour and road closure signs all week.

Crews say they will close down one lane in the morning and then close the other side in the afternoon to help keep traffic moving on the bridges.

But even though we have seen higher river levels in the last few years, crews aren't worried about these bridges falling down.

Instead, they say they'll cross that bridge if the city sees levels greater than they were back in 2008.

"These bridge inspections help us to keep the bridges in good operational condition. When we have events like high water, flooding and those short of things, we do another inspection to make sure," Capital Improvement Project Manager Doug Wilson said.

Wilson said if there is a concern with any bridge, they'll close the bridge down immediately for repairs.
