CBS 2 Heroes - George Stout

Updated: Tuesday, March 4 2014, 09:50 PM CST
A hero's work comes in many forms.  It is rare, though, when our local hero has such a profound and lasting impact on history.
Our CBS 2 Hero, George Stout, died in 1978.   But his work has gained recent and deserved attention.   Born in Winterset and a graduate of the University of Iowa, Stout would revolutionize art conservation.  So much so, that he was enlisted to put together a team of art experts and recover stolen art by the Nazis.  You may not know the name George Stout, but you likely do know the name of the  man who played him in a blockbuster movie, "The Monuments Men," George Clooney.
Director of the U of I Museum of Art, Sean O'Hallow said this of Stout, "As a Lt., he was able to lead a sort of ragtag group of other art historians and artists to cover large sways of Europe, in order to find where the Nazis had hidden the art."  He goes on to describe Stout's work, "He accomplished alot.  He saved the Mona Lisa.  And he saved the Bayeux Tapestry.  He saved 40 tons of art."
Stout went on to also help Japan recover and restore works of art after the war.CBS 2 Heroes - George Stout
